Nexans develops and manufactures superconducting components for various power applications at different sites.
In Hanover superconducting cables are developed and tested. The product range covers low voltage cables with very high ampacity, over the medium voltage cables up to high voltage cables. The accessories and terminations are developed in Calais (France) whereas the cable core is manufactured in Halden (Norway). In Hanover the cable is completed by the cable cryostat.
The research focus in Hürth are superconducting fault current limiters (SFLC). These are used to connect sub-networks, without increasing the short-circuit capacity of the entire network. In addition, materials for the production of superconductors and components are manufactured and marketed there.
The use of superconducting equipment enables innovative improvements in energy supply networks. As a consequence costs will be reduced significantly, space requirements can be minimized and the reliability and safety of supply will be increased.
