Electrical tests after installation

Cable testing

Cables with PVC insulation and paper insulated cables

Voltage test with DC1)

Test voltage         5.6 to 8 UO

Time                      15 to 30 min

alternativ:

Voltage test with AC 45 to 65 Hz2)

Test voltage         2 UO (r.m.s.)

Time                      30 min3)

alternativ:

Voltage test with AC 0.1 Hz2)

Test voltage         3 UO (r.m.s.)

Time                      30 min3)

1) In mixed installations with service aged PE/XLPE-cables it is possible to get a damage by using of too high DC test voltage levels. After the voltage test it is important to ground the cable by a suitable resistor.

2) The test levels and times are preference values and must be confirmed by practical experiences.

3) In mixed installations with PE/XLPE-cables the test time should be 60 min.

Cables with XLPE insulation

Voltage test with AC 45 to 65 Hz1)

Test voltage         2 UO (r.m.s.)

Time                      60 min

alternativ:

Voltage test with AC 0.1 Hz1)

Test voltage         3 UO (r.m.s.)

Time                      60 min

1) The test levels and times are preference values and were settled on the basis of experiences from laboratories and the practice.

Sheath testing1)

For tests on polymer outer sheath of screened or armoured cables the following DC test voltage may be applied between screen or
armouring and ground for about 1 min:

PE sheath ≤ 5 kV
PVC sheath ≤ 3 kV

1) It should be choosed such test methods which do not cause any damage on the cable by e.g. the energy of the impulse waves.
