Nexans displays innovations in corrugated tube manufacture and high-quality copper wires at wire 2008

High-quality wires from Nexans are the basis for special cable solutions;
corrugated tubes with greater diameters will make LNG terminals of the future possible

Bramsche/Hanover, March 31, 2008 – Nexans Deutschland Industries GmbH & Co.KG is presenting exhibits from the fields of wire manufacture (Bramsche/Neunburg) and production technology (Hanover) at Stand C41 in Hall 09 at the wire 2008 trade fair (Dusseldorf, March 31 – April 4, 2008).


Hidden high technology: copper wires and strands

High-quality wires and strands are being produced at Nexans in Bramsche and Neunburg using top-class, oxygen-free copper primary materials. The interim products are suited for standard and, in particular, special cables as the quality of the copper material produced at Nexans enables improved nickel, tin and silver plating than with cheap types of copper. As a result, high-quality insulating materials such as teflon can be applied more successfully in cable production. This makes it possible to manufacture high-capacity, long-life end products. Therefore, wires and strands produced by Nexans are not only popular within the Group itself but also among suppliers to industry and aerospace. Frequently, they are also the first choice for high-quality data cables. At wire, Nexans is exhibiting various samples from the broad product range of the plants in Bramsche and Neunburg.


Larger corrugated tube machine opens up new application areas

This year, Nexans is to launch a new machine in the UNIWEMA® (UNIversal WElding MAchine) series which is capable of producing even larger corrugated tubes. Here, single and double-wall corrugated tubes are used in cases requiring a flexible, high-capacity and, if necessary, heat-insulating transport medium or secure sheathing, e.g. as mechanical protection in the implementation of media cables. The new UNIWEMA® U650 produces tubes with external diameters of up to 650 mm and wall thicknesses of up to 3 mm; the length of the corrugated tube is restricted exclusively by the transport capacities. The machine forms stainless steel tapes into  tubes, welds them longitudinally and, using the corrugating tool, impresses the characteristic corrugated structure which provides flexibility. Extreme precision is provided by a powerful, hydraulic, dual-capstan drive, electronic control of the corrugating tool and the patented polyarc welding process.
For example, larger corrugated tubes can accelerate the loading of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is transported on ships. Complex antifreeze insulation is also required in order to keep the LNG in a liquid state during transhipping at the terminal. Double-wall corrugated tubes with a vacuum insulation provide protection against the effects of heat and enable the design of mobile, joint-free handling arms (see photo). Using the larger UNIWEMA®, it is possible to produce thermally insulated tubes which can transport roughly twice as much gas in the same time as existing cables. This halves the handling time and minimises the evaporation loss.
