Flame-retardant ALSECURE cables for direct underground laying replace existing fire safety medium-voltage cables
Nexans showcases samples of the cable series at POWERGRID Europe, 8 to 10 June 2010, Amsterdam, at stand S39
Hanover, 7 June 2010 – Flame-retardant ALSECURE medium-voltage cables offer major saving potential. Unlike existing fire safety cables with an HM4 sheath mixture, the ALSECURE cables can be laid directly in the ground and still offer the same level of safety in the event of a fire. This is all thanks to a sheath mixture developed and patented by Nexans Deutschland GmbH. It is halogen-free, flame-retardant, stops fires from spreading and does not give off any toxic or corrosive gases when exposed to fire. It also gives off much less smoke than conventional PVC cables. What makes this new sheath material unique is that it not only offers the mechanical strength of high-density polyethylene and fulfils HM4 requirements, but it also absorbs hardly any moisture. This means that it can be laid directly underground without the need for installation tubes. Whether in power plants, power distribution networks, industrial estates or on railways, the benefits of the ALSECURE series really become apparent wherever stringent fire safety requirements apply and underground laying is desirable. Since Nexans can offer these new medium-voltage cables at comparable prices, the corresponding HM4 types will be replaced by their ALSECURE counterparts with immediate effect.
Nexans has already supplied halogen-free underground cables for a range of projects, including for new sections of Istanbul’s underground railway system and for the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant run by E.ON Kernkraft GmbH where the medium-voltage cables are used to connect a substation. Prospective customers can find out more about the flame-resistant ALSECURE medium-voltage cables at POWERGRID Europe in Amsterdam. The Nexans team will be showcasing cable samples at stand S39 at the congress trade fair from 8 to 10 June.
