New Industrial Ethernet switches with high port density

Robust 24-port Industrial Ethernet switch for use in intelligent networks

Hanover, April 4, 2011 – Nexans Deutschland has developed a new series of Industrial Ethernet switches with a very high port density. These harsh environment switch systems are supporting the connection of up to 24 network subscribers via fiber-optic or twisted pair cables and are supporting “Gigabit Ethernet” as well as "Fast Ethernet" data rates at all ports. The optical SFP (small form factor pluggable) interfaces allow a very flexible use of the systems. As a fibre-optic cable node, the new switch can be used to link new IEDs (intelligent electronic devices) in IEC-61850-compliant smart grids. These robust 24-port switches will be available from the fourth quarter of 2011.

The new 24-port switch is the epitome of high performance and robustness. Thanks to its compact design and due to its low installation depth it can easily be installed on a standard DIN-rail, in a 19" distributor as well as directly on the wall. High availability, even in critical climatic conditions such as in local area network stations, is ensured due to its wide operating temperature range, namely from -40°C to +85°C.

Two integrated, redundant power packs with 24V, 48V, 110/220V DC or 110/230V AC supply guarantee smooth operation. Network redundancy procedures such as rapid spanning tree (RSTP), multiple spanning tree (MSTP) and industrial media redundancy protocols (MRP) are supported so that the switchover and reconfiguration of the network can be realised within a few milliseconds. Up to 8 connected users can be supplied with Power over Ethernet (via RJ45 connections). In accordance with the latest IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) standard, up to 25.5 watts of power are available for each connected device.

I/O interfaces allow a swift, simple and low-cost integration of additional devices directly in the field. The switches are offering extensive management functionalities with interactions, sending of messages as well as the activation of alarms. The systems can be configured and managed in a user-friendly manner via Web, telnet and SNMP interfaces as well as via the Nexans management software tool "NexMan". The Nexans switches support extensive security mechanisms as well as encrypted data transfer via SSH, HTTPS and SNMPv3.

Quick and easy remote diagnosis and notification are realised by means of SNMP traps, Syslog messages and signalling contacts. The simple restoration of the system configuration is another positive aspect in this connection: The mirrored system configuration as well as the MAC address, is transferred to the new system via an exchangeable MMC memory card. It is thus possible to replace faulty systems quickly and inexpensively without outside help.

Nexans Deutschland will be presenting the new Industrial Ethernet switches at the Hannover Messe trade fair (April 4-8, 2011, hall 13, stand C99).
