Nexans hosts regional “Jugend forscht – Young Researchers” competition from 9 to 10 February 2012 in Hanover
“WE LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR MIND.” - Nexans is supporting the competition for young researchers
Hanover, 2 February 2012 – Under the slogan “We like what you have in your mind”, over 80 young scientists from Hanover and the surrounding area will be lining up at Nexans Deutschland GmbH in Hanover on 9 and 10 February to compete in the “Young Researchers/School Students Experiment” regional competition. Jurors will select semi-finalist candidates from among roughly 40 projects in the categories of natural sciences, mathematics, technology and workplace studies who will then participate in the Lower Saxony state finals in March (in Clausthal-Zellerfeld for young people and Oldenburg for school students). The winners of the state finals will then proceed to the 47th national competition, which is being hosted in Erfurt by the Jugend forscht e.V. foundation together with the Foundation for Technology, Innovation and Research from 17 to 21 May.
Projects are evidence of passion for research and a practical approach
Participants under 15 years old present their projects in the “School Students Experiment” regional junior competition. In Hanover, we can expect experimental and practical scientific topics such as how to combine and store renewable energies for everyday use. The 15 to 21 age group will also be presenting a wide range of projects covering diverse areas in the context of “Young Researchers”. One project looks at the best age for learning vocabulary for example. However, subject matter and content alone do not decide victory in the regional competition. The jury, which consists of educators, experts from the world of business and specialists from Nexans, also evaluates the preparation and presentation of the projects.
Technical themes popular among entrants
Nexans is supporting the competition in Hanover for the 21st time. Nexans’ “Young Researchers” mentor Jutta van Bühl had this to say on this year’s regional competition: “Every year, I am bowled over by the consistently high level of interest that the young researchers show in technical and nature-related topics and the originality of the issues raised. The fact that many of the research projects focus on intelligent use of energy, the environment and climate protection is especially encouraging for us as a cable manufacturer in direct contact with the energy sector.”
Interested parties can view the projects from the regional competition on 9 February from 10:00 to 17:00 and on 10 February from 9:00 to 12:00 in the public exhibition at the Nexans site at Kabelkamp 20, Hanover. The winners for each category will be announced in the afternoon on the second day of the competition.
